5 Apartment Heating Tips to Save You Money

If you happen to live in a city where the winter weather tends to be especially harsh and you’re also an individual who lives in an apartment, then you can probably attest to the fact that depending on how cold it gets, sometimes your heating bill can end up costing you a couple of hundred dollars—easily.

It doesn’t have to be that way. There are actually some things that you can do that will help to keep your apartment warm while also saving you some extra dollars in the process. If you’re curious to know what some of those things are, please keep reading:

Watch your thermostat. There are a lot of us who think that if we turn our thermostat off while we’re at work or gone for the weekend that it will cut down on our energy costs. But, the truth of the matter is that it requires more electricity to turn it off and on than to simply put it on a lower setting. If you want to keep your apartment comfortable without spending an arm and leg to do so, set your thermostat between 68-70 degrees. If you get too cold, take a space heater with you inside of the room where you tend to spend the most time.

Get some thermal curtains. Something else that can help to keep the cool air out is purchasing some thermal curtains. They are specifically designed to trap the heat inside of your apartment so that you don’t have to rely so much on your central unit. Another great thing about them is that they are fairly economical. You can find them for under $20 at stores like Wal-Mart and Target.

Keep your doors and windows shut. When you’re in an apartment, you’re probably quick to keep your door shut. But if you happen to have a screen door, make sure that it’s also closed all of the way and definitely don’t keep your windows cracked while the heat is on. That’s literally like throwing dollar bills outside.

Have your unit and water heater serviced. One of the best things about living in an apartment is that you have a maintenance staff who takes care of your household needs, free of charge. However, don’t assume that just because you pay rent each month that your apartment management is automatically going to come over with their HVAC industry tools and service your central heat and air unit or that they will check your water heater to make sure that it’s working at an optimal level. Before winter hits, make a request for them to inspect the unit, change your filters and also turn your water heater down about 20 degrees. If it’s already set at 140, going down to 120 should not be extremely noticeable but it can save you some money on your water bills.

Dress for warmth. Pretty much all of us want to come home and get comfortable, so we understand if you don’t want to stay fully dressed. But, if you don’t want to keep turning up the temperature on your thermostat, try and dress for the cool weather. Walk around with socks on your feet and when it’s time for bed, opt for flannel pajamas and flannel sheets too. It’s doing little things like those which can make all the difference in the world when it comes to how much you pay for heat each month. Especially during the winter season.
